The Event Safety Shop Ltd is a company dedicated to meeting the health and safety needs of the sports, entertainment and events industries. We combine expertise in event planning, management and logistics with internationally recognised health and safety qualifications to provide an unrivalled service.

Our work on a range of event types and locations means we have requisite skills and experience in the safe planning of events, regardless of the scale of the activity or audience.

All of our staff members have a considerable pedigree of event experience – having worked in show production for many years prior to gaining formal health and safety qualification – which means our advice and opinion are grounded in the real world rather than an abstract application of safety regulations.

TESS is directly involved with The Sports Grounds and Events Committee and on the HSE’s Joint Advisory Committee on Entertainment (JACE); AGOTS committee for the Institute of Structural Engineers; Council member of Production Services Association;  The Event Industry Forum; Event Safety Alliance (USA), and is passionate as a company to evolve safety within the world of events.

Tim Roberts - Director

Tim has consulted on a huge range of shows, including festivals, sporting events, national celebrations and concerts across the globe. He once ran away to the circus, but fell in with the wrong crowd and now is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH). He has a Post-Graduate Certificate in Crowd Modelling and Risk Analysis  and is currently in the final year of study for the MSc. This combination of qualification and practical experience gives excellent insight into the safety challenges of major event production and an ability to find practical solutions.

He has been actively involved in developing national standards for the entertainment sector, including work with the HSE, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the PSA.  As a board member of the USA’s Event Safety Alliance, Tim was instrumental in developing the basic guidance document (based on our own HSG195 Event Safety Guide) which the ESA hopes will become a global benchmark.

Simon James - Director

Initially trained as a civil engineer, Simon has been working in the event industry for 30 years, covering a multitude of roles.  For the first 15 years, he travelled the world as a rigger working with bands such as the Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, Take That and many more. Needing to get his feet back on the ground, Simon made the decision in 2002 to take a poacher turned game keeper role and moved  to managing the safety side of events. For 15 years, he has been working at The Event Safety Shop, the last 10 as a director.  Working at TESS has given Simon the chance to work on many amazing large national and international jobs ranging from festivals to fashion shows, sporting events, fireworks displays and every conceivable event in between.

Simon is an elected council member of the Production Services Association , and an industry representative on the Advisory Group On Temporary Structures at the Institution of Structural Engineers and the HSE’s  entertainment working group.

Mike Richmond - Director

Mike was the original founder of TESS and has continued to be a Company Director and part of the Safety team since 1999.

Now boasting over 30 year’s experience in the events industry, Mike’s career started in the sporting world, moving through local authority and the International Festival of the Sea, to founding his own companies including The Event Safety Shop. As a planner and organiser of major events in his own right, Mike’s skills and experience make him suited equally to on-site production, safety management and client liaison.  Dealing with local authorities and responsible agencies, and managing event control facilities is second nature. He is often called upon for new and one off events take place, often in challenging environments.
